Data Engineering Lead

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day delivery, planning, prioritisation, 1:1s and removing blockers
• Define engineering standards for code review, testing, data contracts and on-call
• Make and document architecture decisions across ingestion, transformation, serving and orchestration
• Own ingestion from transactional databases, SaaS platforms, events and third-party APIs
• Own the dbt project end to end, including incremental models, tests and documentation
• Optimise BigQuery and design low-latency analytical serving in ClickHouse
• Operate production Airflow workloads and establish data quality and freshness checks
• Lead incident response and build CI/CD and automated testing for data code
• Identify practical uses of LLMs and AI agents in data discovery and troubleshooting

Requirements

• 6+ years in data or backend engineering on production systems
• At least 1 year leading or mentoring data engineers
• Track record of owning a data platform across architecture, reliability and cost
• Strong Python and advanced SQL
• 2+ years of production dbt experience
• Hands-on production Apache Airflow experience
• Production BigQuery experience including partitioning, clustering and cost optimisation
• Working knowledge of GCP, PostgreSQL, Linux and Git
• Experience with Apache Flink or a comparable stream processing framework

Preferred Qualifications

• Production ClickHouse experience
• Managed ELT platforms such as Airbyte or Fivetran
• CDC and event streaming with Datastream, Kafka or Debezium
• Kubernetes and Terraform
• BI tools such as Tableau or Power BI
• LLM APIs, RAG and agent frameworks
• Data observability tools and PCI DSS governance experience
