Lead, Safety Assurance

Responsibilities

• Review, quality-assure, and approve SGO incident narratives prior to submission
• Monitor NHTSA and state enforcement trends, proposed rulemakings, and safety guidance
• Support responses to NHTSA investigations or enforcement actions
• Assess alignment of internal safety policies with federal and state AV regulatory requirements
• Support development of internal safety benchmarks (SMS, FMVSS, SAE standards)
• Create and maintain a library of compliance documentation and regulatory context summaries
• Prepare safety-relevant regulatory submissions and correspondence
• Advise on passenger and public safety best practices informed by federal standards and NTSB findings
• Brief executive and Legal leadership on regulatory developments and compliance status

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in AV safety regulation, incident management, or safety compliance
• Deep familiarity with NHTSA's Standing General Order (SGO) reporting requirements
• Hands-on experience with FMVSS, NHTSA exemption frameworks, and SAE ADS taxonomy
• Proven ability to manage regulatory submissions and compliance documentation
• Experience working alongside legal counsel on regulatory strategy
• Exceptional written communication skills for technical safety content
• Ability to operate independently in high-stakes, ambiguous situations

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience at NHTSA's Office of Automation Safety or Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance
• Background in crash reconstruction, forensic engineering, or ADS safety case evaluation
• Experience briefing senior leadership on incident trends
• Graduate degree in mechanical engineering, safety engineering, or a related technical field
• Experience working within cross-functional teams to manage safety critical issues
