About the Company

Railway's core mission is to make software engineers higher leverage by providing powerful tools that reduce setup time and increase productivity. Railway now powers workloads for millions of builders, managing complex systems like usage metering, billing, payments, and data pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and scale pipelines for real-time billing, including metering, aggregation, and invoicing.
  • Build correct and idempotent payment flows using providers like Stripe.
  • Develop fraud and abuse detection systems for real-time scoring and automated mitigation.
  • Scale core infrastructure including Postgres under heavy write load and Node.js services.
  • Orchestrate long-running workflows using Temporal with exactly-once semantics.
  • Build TypeScript and GraphQL APIs focused on correctness and auditability.
  • Write Engineering Requirement Documents (ERDs) from ideation to implementation.
  • Contribute to open-source repositories such as the CLI and TypeScript SDK.
  • Participate in on-call rotations.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to lead and implement backend systems with high consistency and auditability.
  • Track record of scaling services or databases to handle significant growth (e.g., 10x load).
  • Deep expertise in Postgres and relational data modeling.
  • Strong working knowledge of Node.js internals and event loop behavior.
  • Experience with asynchronous backend jobs or workflow engines like Temporal.
  • Familiarity with money movement, including idempotency, retries, and reconciliation.
  • Security-aware mindset regarding system abuse and gaming.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for asynchronous environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Rust.
  • Direct experience in billing, payments, or fraud detection systems.
