Backend Engineer

About the Company

The European Payments Initiative is changing the way Europe pays with Wero, a proudly European digital wallet designed to make payments easier, clearer, and more secure. Backed by 16 major banks and the two largest European acquirers, we are building a brand new, unified European payment ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver backend features end to end, from API design and implementation to deployment and monitoring
• Lead the architecture and evolution of cloud-based microservices to ensure scalability and security
• Define and uphold high code quality standards and best practices for maintainable services
• Support mobile engineers by providing backend expertise and guidance on API usage and data contracts
• Drive backend platform decisions and balance global consistency with mobile-specific needs
• Collaborate with product management, design, web, and QA teams to ensure efficient delivery

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software development experience
• 5+ years of backend development experience
• Proficiency in Kotlin, Ktor, Docker, Kubernetes, MongoDB, and Kafka
• Proven experience in building scalable system architectures and REST API design
• Experience with Agile methodologies and automated testing
• Fluent in English (C1 or C2 level)
• Ability to thrive in a remote-first, multicultural environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience designing and implementing Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) services
• Experience with UI/UX or frontend components
• Familiarity with frontend or mobile integration concerns
• Proficiency in German, Dutch, French, or other European languages
