Job description
Responsibilities
- Define the process flow for ultra-large forging operations including melting, casting, ingot conditioning, forging sequences, and heat treatment
- Study existing world-class facilities to understand best practices and challenge current process assumptions
- Understand physical and chemical phenomena driving homogenization and impurity removal during large ingot casting
- Develop forging process models from first principles covering deformation mechanics, thermal profiles, and microstructural evolution
- Identify opportunities to improve quality, energy consumption, and capital equipment requirements
- Collaborate with the project team to produce equipment cost and construction schedule estimates
- Develop preliminary process design basis documents for melting, forging, and heat treatment shops
- Interface with international technical partners to absorb operational knowledge
Requirements
- 7–15 years of experience in metallurgical or metal-forming roles
- Deep understanding of grain structure formation and heat treatment parameters
- Expertise in thermomechanics of open-die forging and deformation behavior of low-alloy and stainless steels
- Experience with large-scale metal forming, heat treatment, or steelmaking processes
- Proven track record of developing novel process solutions based on fundamental understanding
- Ability to operate as a domain expert within a multidisciplinary team
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in downstream precision machining
- Advanced degree in metallurgical engineering, materials science, or mechanical engineering
- Background in aerospace forging or national laboratory research
