Lead Metallurgical Process Engineer

Responsibilities

• Define the process flow for ultra-large forging operations including melting, casting, ingot conditioning, forging sequences, and heat treatment
• Study existing world-class facilities to understand best practices and challenge current process assumptions
• Understand physical and chemical phenomena driving homogenization and impurity removal during large ingot casting
• Develop forging process models from first principles covering deformation mechanics, thermal profiles, and microstructural evolution
• Identify opportunities to improve quality, energy consumption, and capital equipment requirements
• Collaborate with the project team to produce equipment cost and construction schedule estimates
• Develop preliminary process design basis documents for melting, forging, and heat treatment shops
• Interface with international technical partners to absorb operational knowledge

Requirements

• 7–15 years of experience in metallurgical or metal-forming roles
• Deep understanding of grain structure formation and heat treatment parameters
• Expertise in thermomechanics of open-die forging and deformation behavior of low-alloy and stainless steels
• Experience with large-scale metal forming, heat treatment, or steelmaking processes
• Proven track record of developing novel process solutions based on fundamental understanding
• Ability to operate as a domain expert within a multidisciplinary team

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in downstream precision machining
• Advanced degree in metallurgical engineering, materials science, or mechanical engineering
• Background in aerospace forging or national laboratory research
