Job description

Responsibilities

  • Own the design of core Chess.com product experiences including Gameplay, Puzzles, and Tournaments
  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and leadership to define problems and build effective experiences
  • Design polished, intuitive interfaces for web and mobile using the Chess.com design system
  • Build interactive prototypes and leverage agentic tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and Figma Make to test ideas
  • Drive systemic design improvements to enhance consistency and scalability across the entire product
  • Lead design critiques and mentor other designers to raise the craft bar across the team

Requirements

  • 10+ years designing consumer-facing products or games, ideally for large, active user bases
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in interface and user experience design and product influence
  • Mastery of UI design fundamentals including typography, color, layout, and visual hierarchy
  • Experience leveraging agentic tools like Cursor, Claude Code, or Figma Make in your design process
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to document and explain design decisions
  • Proven ability to influence decisions across cross-functional teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • A love for the game of chess and familiarity with our product
  • Experience designing games or game-like consumer products
  • Experience using motion and micro-interactions to add delight to a product
  • Frontend or design engineering experience (web, iOS, or Android)
  • Experience evolving or scaling a design system across a large product
