Senior/Staff Backend Payments Engineer

Responsibilities

• Build and own critical backend systems in TypeScript that power payments, balances, settlement, and reconciliation
• Design reliable money movement flows with strong guarantees around idempotency, consistency, and failure recovery
• Lead technical architecture across the payments domain, including system boundaries, data models, and operational strategy
• Work closely with product, compliance, and infrastructure teams to ship financial primitives
• Define handling for edge cases such as partial failures, retries, timeouts, and reconciliation gaps
• Raise engineering quality standards regarding code, testing, monitoring, and incident response
• Mentor engineers and drive technical clarity across the team

Requirements

• Deep experience building production backend services in TypeScript (Node.js)
• Proven experience with payments, ledgering, or financial infrastructure
• Strong understanding of APIs, state machines, and data integrity
• Ability to design and scale systems from zero to one
• Strong judgment regarding technical tradeoffs like speed vs. safety and simplicity vs. flexibility

Preferred Qualifications

• Fintech, banking, or crypto-native background
• Experience designing event-driven systems, including queues and asynchronous processing
• Familiarity with stablecoins, custody, settlement, and blockchain transaction lifecycles
