Backend Engineer

Responsibilities

• Help build PostHog's observability suite, including Logs, Traces, and Metrics
• Design systems to ingest, store, and retrieve enormous volumes of telemetry at petabyte scale
• Own product areas end-to-end from alpha to GA, making critical architecture calls
• Ensure data is retrieved efficiently and cost-effectively to manage infrastructure costs

Requirements

• Experience with highly scalable, event-driven distributed systems
• Strong understanding of the full data lifecycle (ingestion, cost-aware storage, and retrieval)
• Proficiency with Node.js, Go, Rust, or similar languages
• Experience with Kafka, ClickHouse, PostgreSQL, Redis, or S3 at scale
• Ability to drive ambiguous, greenfield problems forward independently
• Experience working with multi-tenant SaaS
• Proven ability to ship changes quickly and reliably

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of observability systems and practices (OpenTelemetry, logs/metrics/traces)
• Experience with high-throughput log aggregation or metric collection systems
• Experience handling on-call incidents
• Comfort with provisioning and maintaining cloud infrastructure
• Experience using benchmarking and profiling tools
