About the Company
SafeLease is a profitable insurance business that designs, underwrites, and distributes specialty coverage for commercial property owners and their tenants. We back our policies with our own capital, controlling the full stack from product design to technology.
Responsibilities
- Own and oversee all accounting operations across the MGA and the surplus lines carrier
- Prepare and deliver timely financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP)
- Manage statutory reporting and regulatory filings including NAIC Annual Statements and Schedules F, P, and D
- Oversee MGA accounting under the NAIC Managing General Agents Act
- Design, implement, and maintain robust internal controls and financial policies
- Lead annual statutory and GAAP audits and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors and regulators
- Build, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team
- Manage consolidated financial reporting across SafeLease entities
- Partner with the CEO and senior leadership to provide financial insights and strategic recommendations
- Own premium and claims accounting cycles, reinsurance accounting, and loss reserve accounting
- Oversee cash management, treasury, and investment accounting
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements
- Evaluate and enhance financial systems and technology infrastructure
Requirements
- Insurance carrier experience spanning an MGA and a surplus lines or admitted carrier
- Statutory accounting (SAP) and NAIC reporting experience
- Big Four audit or assurance background (Deloitte, PwC, EY, or KPMG)
- CPA designation
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting and finance experience
- Deep expertise in both U.S. GAAP and SAP frameworks
- Experience managing accounting functions across multiple legal entities
- Strong technical skills in consolidations, intercompany eliminations, and reinsurance accounting
- Hands-on familiarity with NAIC Schedules F, P, and D and Risk-Based Capital reporting
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or an MBA
- Experience in a high-growth insurtech or specialty insurer environment
- Experience with state-by-state premium tax filings and surplus lines tax compliance
- Experience operating within an insurance holding structure
- Familiarity with investment accounting under SSAP standards
- Proficiency with insurance-specific statutory reporting and ERP platforms
- SOX internal controls implementation experience
