Data Engineer II

Responsibilities

• Build AI-driven data products for the education data ecosystem, including agents, chatbots, automatic query rewriting, and automated model generation
• Implement solutions end-to-end from architecture to delivery with autonomy
• Strengthen reliability of agentic systems through guardrails, validation mechanisms, and observability tools such as LangFuse
• Build and evolve internal MCPs for dbt, Metabase, and Slack to standardize agent access to data sources
• Evaluate technical trade-offs such as RAG vs LLM Wiki, heuristic vs LLM, and cost vs latency vs quality
• Conduct comparative experiments, document recommendations, and decide jointly with senior team members
• Participate in code reviews focusing on performance, token cost, maintainability, and consumer impact
• Collaborate with Data Platform and Analytics Engineering on contracts, latency, governance, and platform connectivity

Requirements

• Proficiency in Python and SQL
• Knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and application scalability
• Experience orchestrating pipelines with Airflow, dbt, or Dataform
• Monitoring and observability practices
• Cloud solutions experience
• Experience building system integrations (APIs, webhooks, MCPs)

Preferred Qualifications

• Containerization and deployment with Docker and Kubernetes
• CI/CD experience
• Production agentic systems experience including prompt engineering, agent orchestration, tools, sub-agents, parallelism, retry, and fallback strategies
• MCP (Model Context Protocol) development or consumption
• RAG and alternative architectures knowledge
• AI system evaluation experience using LangFuse and designing evals for non-deterministic systems
• Integration with visualization platforms (Metabase, Looker, Tableau)
• Claude Code custom skills creation
• Infrastructure as code
