Principal Engineer

Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture and implementation of major initiatives in the grantmaking platform
• Make architectural decisions by considering multiple approaches and surfacing trade-offs
• Provide technical leadership across all phases of engineering work, from scoping to maintenance
• Work cross-functionally with product, infrastructure, DevOps, and QA teams
• Design and implement user-facing and backend features across the entire platform
• Produce high-quality, well-tested code and drive best practices across the SDLC
• Mentor engineers and raise the architectural literacy of the group
• Champion the thoughtful use of AI and agents in the SDLC

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Experience as a principal engineer or architect on a complex SaaS platform
• Deep full-stack experience with Ruby on Rails and React
• Strong foundation in computer science and web application performance
• Proficiency with Node.js, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript
• Experience with AWS, DevOps fundamentals, and MySQL at scale
• Familiarity with Elasticsearch, Redis, and Resque
• Experience with AI-assisted development workflows
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Go, Python, or Java
• Experience with systems targeting high-performance and concurrency
