Senior Software Engineer, Data Platform

Apella is applying computer vision and machine learning to improve the standard of care in the most critical aspect of healthcare: surgery. We build applications to enable surgeons, nurses, and hospital administrators to deliver the highest quality care.

Responsibilities

• Build and extend batch pipelines using dbt for transformations and Dagster for orchestration
• Develop and optimize BigQuery data models to support analytics and reporting
• Advance real-time streaming capabilities using Kafka/PubSub and FlinkSQL
• Design data platform standards including SDLC, naming conventions, and CI/CD
• Improve reliability and observability through monitoring, alerting, and SLAs/SLOs
• Partner with analytics, product, and engineering teams to onboard new data sources
• Own platform operations including performance tuning, data quality, and cost optimization
• Design a unified serving layer architecture for batch and streaming systems

Requirements

• Strong proficiency in SQL and data modeling
• Hands-on experience with dbt
• Experience with batch orchestration tooling like Dagster or Airflow
• Proficiency in Python for data engineering tasks
• Deep familiarity with BigQuery or equivalent cloud native data warehouse tooling
• Solid experience with GCP (or AWS/Azure) infrastructure
• Strong engineering fundamentals including version control and testing

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with data quality tooling and anomaly detection
• Experience designing semantic or metrics layers
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures and CDC patterns
• Experience with Kafka and Apache Flink
• Experience with IaC (Terraform) and CI/CD
• Understanding of privacy and security controls (PII handling)
