Senior Software Engineer, Scientific Computing

About the Company

KoBold builds AI models for mineral exploration and deploys those models—alongside our novel sensors—to guide decisions on KoBold-owned-and-operated exploration programs. In the six years since founding, KoBold has become by far both the largest independent mineral exploration company and the largest exploration technology developer.

Responsibilities

• Architect, implement, and maintain foundational scientific computing libraries
• Build tooling to increase machine learning velocity, including Jupyter notebook prototyping and experimentation frameworks
• Turn successful R&D into robust, scalable ML pipelines
• Collaborate with data scientists to build models for predicting economic concentrations of ore metals
• Apply and coach team members on engineering best practices like writing testable and composable code
• Occasional travel to exploration sites around the world (approximately twice per year)

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience as a software engineer, data scientist, or ML engineer
• Track record of building production quality data processing solutions
• Proficiency with foundational ML concepts (statistical, traditional, and deep-learning)
• Proficiency in Python, ideally with array-based packages like xarray and numpy
• Deep experience with measured scientific data
• Experience in visualizing scientific data for domain experts
• Experience in MLOps and building robust ML systems
• Ability to work with limited, disparate, and noisy data sources

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the geology or mineral exploration domain
• Ability to explain technical problems to domain experts who are not software developers
