Senior Software Engineer

Responsibilities

• Designing, improving, and maintaining key parts of the MediaWiki stack
• Driving technical quality and operational excellence in testing, observability, and system reliability
• Creating proofs of concept, writing design documents, and breaking down complex projects
• Developing shared capabilities such as authentication, caching, and rate limiting
• Championing product metrics to guide technical decisions
• Leading code reviews and fostering a collaborative team culture
• Automating processes for identifying and resolving production issues
• Collaborating with Product teams and the community to align technical solutions with strategy
• Coaching and mentoring teammates

Requirements

• Extensive experience in backend software engineering
• Familiarity with platform or infrastructure products
• Experience with databases and event streams, including schema design and query optimization
• Deep understanding of software architecture, testing methodologies, and system design
• Strong experience in observability practices (metrics, logging, monitoring, alerting)
• Familiarity with incident response and root cause analysis
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and automated test infrastructure

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience developing frameworks for reuse and extensibility
• Proficiency in PHP and JavaScript
• Familiarity with identity management and OAuth
• Experience with Kubernetes ecosystem and Envoy
• Experience with Prometheus and Grafana
• Experience working with SLAs/SLOs
• Prior experience with MediaWiki or Wikimedia projects
• Contributions to open-source software
• Experience working in a fully remote, distributed team
