Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Develop techniques for discovering threat models and generating risk pathway analyses that capture societal and sociotechnical dimensions.
  • Model multi-node risk transformation, amplification, and threshold effects propagating through social systems, with a focus on catastrophic and loss-of-control scenarios.
  • Contribute to the design of robust technical governance frameworks and assessment methodologies for advanced AI risks.
  • Provide strategic and tactical quality control for the team’s research, ensuring conceptual soundness and technical accuracy.
  • Lead original research projects on comprehensive risk management for advanced AI systems, aligned with team objectives.
  • Collaborate across CARMA teams and with UAE-based stakeholders to integrate risk assessment paradigms with operational, policy, and standards workstreams.
  • Contribute to technical standards and best practices for evaluation, risk measurement, and risk thresholding of AI systems.
  • Craft clear, persuasive communications for technical and non-technical stakeholders, including UAE government, industry, and research partners.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in complex systems theory, control theory, cybernetics, multi-scale modeling, or dynamical systems.
  • Experience with systemic and sociotechnical modeling of risk propagation and emergent dynamics.
  • Familiarity with Bayesian networks, causal inference, and semi-quantitative hypergraph approaches for risk analysis.
  • Prior work at AI safety research organizations, technical labs, policy institutions, or adjacent high-risk domains.
  • Experience designing or running quality assurance processes for technical research and frameworks.
  • Understanding of international dynamics, power differentials in AI development, and implications for governance.
  • Ability to balance consideration of both acute and aggregate AI risks and to model threshold effects and nonlinear dynamics.
